&lt;p>This curriculum, inspired by the pre-existing &lt;a href="https://datacarpentry.org/lessons/#geospatial">Geospatial Data Carpentry&lt;/a>, part of The Carpentries, was designed to introduce learners from the domain of urbanism to the use of R programming when analysing and visualising vector and raster data. It also introduces basic GIS operations using R. Previously known as &lt;em>FAIR Research Software&lt;/em>, the curriculum has undergone significant changes over the last few months, and we are now seeking Carpentries Instructors willing to teach it in their communities and provide feedback to further improve it.&lt;/p>

The redesigned version will replace &lt;a href="https://datacarpentry.org/R-ecology-lesson/">the existing lesson&lt;/a> later this year. The Curriculum Advisory Committee previously published &lt;a href="https://carpentries.org/blog/2023/07/r-ecology-alt-beta/">a call for Instructors to test the lesson and provide feedback&lt;/a>, which includes a summary of the differences between the two lessons.&lt;/p>
&lt;p>The new lesson lets learners dive into data visualisation much more quickly, letting you quickly &lt;em>appreciate&lt;/em> the benefits of the lesson and enticing you to learn more about data storage, manipulation and analysis as the lesson progresses. &lt;p>The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the buzzwords that researchers would like to include in their research and grant applications,
but few actually understand what it is. So, when I was asked by Kim Martin whether I could run a workshop at Stellenbosch University in
South Africa to introduce a group of curious researchers to this thing they are hearing so much about I immediately agreed – as usual
before completely thinking it through. I am not an IoT expert but merely an enthusiast that likes playing around with microcontrollers,
sensors and computery things such as Raspberry Pis. I am also a research software engineer and I immediately saw an opportunity to introduce
research software engineering to researchers – not only because the workshop is being presented by an RSE but also to tell them how an RSE
