First Software Carpentry Workshop in Japanese

We recently held the first ever Software Carpentry (SWC) workshop in Japanese (online). The workshop was co-hosted with B’AI Global Forum, a research group within the Institute for AI and Beyond, which is a joint project between the University of Tokyo and Softbank. The title of the workshop was “Introduction to Data Analysis with R”, with content based on the one lesson we’ve translated so far, SWC “R for Reproducible Scientific Analysis”¹. Below, we summarize how the workshop went, using the tried-and-true feedback format of “Green Sticky Notes” (things that went well) and “Red Sticky Notes” (things that didn’t go so well).

この間、初めて日本語でソフトウェアカーペントリー（SWC）のワークショップをオンラインで開催しました。今回のワークショップは、東京大学とソフトバンクが共同で立ち上げたBeyond AI研究推進機構の中の研究グループ、B’AI Global Forumとの共同開催でした。「Rによるデータ解析入門」というタイトルで、今まで翻訳してきたRレッスンを元に行いました¹。以下、カーペントリーズ形式で「緑付箋」（上手く行ったこと）と「赤付箋」（上手く行かなかったこと）に分けて感想をまとめました。

共同主催者と密接な連携

今回の共同主催者のB’AI Global Forumには大変お世話になりました。B’AI Global Forumが参加者（主に東京大学文系大学院生）を募集して、重要な連絡をしてくれたので、ワークショップの準備に集中することが出来ました。対応がいつも丁寧かつプロフェッショナルでした。パートナーは大事です。　

オンラインで行うワークショップの知識

今回のワークショップは新型コロナウイルスによってワークショップがオンラインに移り始めてからちょうど一年目というタイミングで行いました。その間に、カーペントリーズのコミュニティーからワークショップをオンラインで行う上でのヒント・アドバイスが色々挙げられました²。インストラクターのためのオンラインでワークショップを行うワークショップもあります！これらの資料は大いに参考になりました。そして、参加者もかなりすでにオンライン（zoom）に慣れていましたので、割とスムーズに行きました。

練習と準備

しかし、ヒントだけでは出来ません。ワークショップの前に２回ほど全員（インストラクター２人、ヘルパー４人）でミーティングをして、インストラクターだけでさらに数回練習会をしました。オンラインでワークショップを行うのは本当に複雑で、落とし穴だらけです。何回も練習したら、ブログポストを読むだけでは分からないことを色々に気付きました。そして、毎回セッションが終わった後にインストラクターやヘルパーで30分くらい反省点など話し合うことによって、次回の内容の調整ができました。

教える内容の変更による混乱

元々は唯一翻訳が完成したレッスンの「R for Reproducible Scientific Analysis」を教えることを予定していたのですが、参加者は主に文系の大学院生で、時間も短いものでした（全５回、２時間ずつ）。そう考えると、Rの基礎を丁寧に教えるSWC形式よりも、なるべく早く実際に応用できるデータ・カーペントリー（DC）の「Data Analysis and Visualization with R for Social Scientists」の方がふさわしい、と思うようになりました。が、データ・カーペントリーのレッスンはまだ日本語訳が出来ていなかったので、最終的には翻訳済のR for Reproducible Scientific Analysisの用語を使いながら、教える内容をDCのレッスンのように教えることにしました（例えば、ベースRよりもtidyverseから使う、など）。ちょっと混乱しましたが、最終的はこのようにして良かったと思います。理想的にはいつか、他のレッスンも翻訳したいところです！

オンラインで教える内容の選定

オンラインのワークショップだと、教えられる内容が大幅に減ることを予想しましたので、レッスンの内容はかなり軽く設定しました。それでも、４回目のレッスンでパイプ（%>%）、dplyr::group_by()、dplyr::summarize()を全部教えようとしたら、流石に多すぎました。この三つのコンセプトはどれも初心者にはかなり難しいので、もっと時間が必要だと反省しています。

まとめ

初の日本語SWCワークショップは全体的に上手く行ったと思います。アンケートでは参加者から非常に高い評価をいただきました³。翻訳が完成したレッスンは今のところ一つしかないことで多少困りましたが、近い将来、他のレッスンもどんどん翻訳したいと思います。皆様から日本語カーペントリーズのコミュニティーのご参加をお待ちしています！

Software Carpentry lessons in Japanese

As previously discussed we have a Japanese language team aiming to maintain a community-led translation of the core Software Carpentry lesson. See our previous posts on how we got started and how we manage collaborative translations via GitHub. Our team has grown internationally in the age of online meetings with contributions from Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and the USA. We hope this will support growing the Carpentries community in Japan and Carpentries lessons for Japanese learners overseas.

Internationalisation of Software Carpentry: System for Translation into Japanese

A collaborative effort to translate the core Software Carpentry lessons into Japanese is currently underway. In this post, we outline how we are managing translations on GitHub, what progress we have made, and what we have learned so far.

Assembling a Team of Translators

We recently came up with the idea of translating Software Carpentry lessons into Japanese and have founded a team to reach this goal. Our recent blog post details how we got started, and this post will explain how you can get involved. Our community in Japan has been responsive and incredibly supportive. We are still just getting started, but everyone who has become involved has been enthusiastic and full of ideas. The team includes members who knew each other personally or professionally, as well as people who reached out online but were not a part of the Software Carpentry community.

There is a growing community that has embarked on a journey of finding missing grammatical particles, debating consistent terminology, and figuring out what a submodule does. All with the goal of providing bilingual software carpentry lessons in English and Japanese. Inspired by the efforts of the Spanish community, we aim to bring multilingual workshops to Japan and provide a Japanese version of the lesson materials for Japanese learners around the world.

Having taught and helped at a series of workshop over the past few months Tom Kelly, PhD Candidate in Genetics at the University of Otago, wrote up some of his reflections on the issues related to workshop attendance. This spurred further discussion via email among the New Zealand instructors. A three day Software Carpentry workshop was held at the University of Otago from June 29 - July 1. The instructors for the course were Mik Black, Nick Burns, Murray Cadzow, David Eyers, Tanya Flynn and Tom Kelly, with Anthony Shaw and Riku Takei providing additional assistance as helpers. This was Tanya’s and Nick’s first time teaching at a SWC workshop, so it was great to add them to our Otago carpentry team.
