Project Overview

The Carpentries is looking for a developer to build a theme for our website using the Hugo static site generator. We previously received funding to improve the accessibility and the information structure of our website and handbooks. We have been working toward this goal, beginning with contracting a web designer to evaluate the information architecture and design of our website. The contractor worked with our team and community to outline mockup designs for an updated website and provided recommendations for our handbooks. We are now in need of further support to complete the development for our website.

Publication of The Carpentries 2022 Annual and Financial Reports

The past year’s Annual and Financial Reports are now available. They can be found on the Reports page, the central resource for all reports including yearly reports, grant reports, and assessment reports released by The Carpentries.

The reports highlight all the work that the Core Team and community have done in 2022, and in addition the Annual Report also outlines some priorities for 2023.

2022 Annual Report

The Carpentries 2022 Annual Report contains a joint message from our Executive Council and the Executive Director of The Carpentries, Dr. Kari L. Jordan. It also reflects on the achievements of the organization and the whole community in responding to the year’s organizational priority of addressing the accessibility needs of our global community.

A Message from Erin Becker

I am elated to announce that Talisha Sutton-Kennedy is advancing to a Junior Team Lead role, and will now be serving as The Carpentries Deputy Director of Business. Since 2018, Talisha has brought her keen attention to detail and process-improvement orientation to the Business and Membership Teams, leading to great improvements in efficiency and confidence in The Carpentries business administration processes. In her new role, Talisha will continue to strengthen our business operations, and will consolidate our Membership processing and support services within the Business Team. Congratulations Talisha!

Thank You! Values Alignment Task Force

Over the last year, our use of certain platforms has been a topic of discussion following the release of information that suggests an organisation may not be acting in accordance with or in alignment with The Carpentries Core Values. These discussions sparked conversations around how The Carpentries decide who we align with.

In response to these conversations, The Carpentries Executive Council approved a charter for a Values Alignment Task Force. The objective of the task force was to outline a set of recommendations that would be used to develop a Due Diligence process for how to identify whether an organisation or service is acting in accordance with The Carpentries Core Values.

Now that those reports have been made available to the community, we have scheduled two themed discussion sessions to dive into the reports later this month.

Please join Carpentries Operations Manager, Talisha Sutton-Kennedy, on a guided tour of the 2020 financial report. This discussion session (or Carpentries Conversation) will begin with a presentation and be followed by a question and answer session.

We are pleased to announce Talisha Sutton-Kennedy has joined The Carpentries staff team in the position of Administrative Support Specialist. Talisha comes to us from Michigan, USA with a diverse background and skill-set. She has a background in research and experience in coding, customer service, volunteer organizations, and administration. Talisha has Bachelors degrees in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from Michigan Technological University. She also has a Masters in Pharmacology & Toxicology from Michigan State University.
