Announcing the 2022 Carpentries Executive Council

We are pleased to announce the results of the community and council elections for the 2022 Executive Council (EC). The 2022 Carpentries Executive Council will assume responsibility of governance from February 1, 2022. We would like to give the most welcome greeting to incoming EC members.

Incoming community-elected members

Three candidates stood for the community election held during the beginning of November 2021. Out of the 1,283 ballots distributed to Voting Members, 192 ballots were cast (15% turnout). The two candidates receiving the highest number of votes and joining the Executive Council for two-year terms as community-elected Members are:

The election for Community-Elected members of the 2022 Executive Council will be open from Nov 03 and will close on Nov 10, anywhere on Earth.

En la sprint the CarpentryCon el 20-21 de Julio se comenzó a traducir la leccion de R para datos geoespaciales de Data Carpentry. Nuestro avance ha sido increíble, en unas horas se logró traducir el 80% de la lección utilizando la plataforma Transifex. (agregar la foto aquí).

Junto con David, Paula y Florencia compartimos toda la sesión, permitiendo unirse a gente de todo el mundo en la franja horaria que fuese más conveniente para ellos.

Entre septiembre de 2017 y mayo de 2018 desarrollamos una iniciativa impulsada por la comunidad para traducir las lecciones de Software Carpentry al español. Su resultado fue la producción de tres lecciones de alta calidad, que pueden utilizarse para enseñar un taller de Software Carpentry consistente de La Terminal de Unix, Control de Versiones con Git, y R para Análisis Científicos Reproducibles.

El siguiente paso lógico para potenciar la cartera de lecciones en español de The Carpentries era traducir una lección de Data Carpentry basada en Python. En noviembre de 2018 iniciamos y completamos un esfuerzo comunitario para crear Análisis y visualización de datos usando Python.

Data Carpentry Python Ecology Lesson Translated into Spanish

From September 2017 to May 2018, there was a community-driven effort to translate the Software Carpentry lessons into Spanish, and the result was the production of three high-quality lessons that can be used to teach a Software Carpentry Workshop consisting of La Terminal de Unix, Control de Versiones con Git, and R para Análisis Científicos Reproducibles.

The next logical step to enhance The Carpentries portfolio of Spanish lessons was to translate a Python-based Data Carpentry lesson. In November 2018, we initiated and completed a community-driven project to create Análisis y visualización de datos usando Python.

CarpentryCon Experienced by Latin American Attendees

Inspired by the “CarpentryCon Experienced by the African Carpentry Task Force” blog post, we decided to copycat our friends from the other side of the Atlantic and share our experience.

CarpentryCon was on my plans to attend since last year. Yes, I was super eager to meet the online community in person. Interacting with people online and then to see familiar faces and add a hug to each of the greetings was very gratifying. I’ve been working with the Carpentry community for three years and a bit more, and since last year, having many online meetings, multiple email and issue threads. All of you were part of my days, also I’ve missed not seeing some of you. For me, it was a sharing kind of event, people are so passionate and interested in taking this forwards so it was always very nice to hear the stories behind what has been achieved. It also gladly surprised me to have heard so many “thank you” phrases flowing one way or the other. Thanks for every person who made the event possible and looking forward to keep on the train of the communities. A personal highlight, when I presented the work of The Carpentries in Latin America in a short talk, I felt the need to continue with this, because many people will benefit of this amazing community.

The idea of translating Carpentries’ lessons into Spanish and other languages is not new [1, 2, 3]. At the end of 2017, a group of volunteers (see Initial Group members below) embarked on the goal of making Spanish translations a reality. We are very happy that many more volunteers joined us in this effort. We did it, and today we can make the fruit of these months of work known to the entire community!

La idea de traducir las lecciones de Carpentry al español y otros lenguajes no es nueva [1, 2, 3]. A finales del 2017, un grupo de voluntarios (ver Grupo inicial) nos embarcamos en la meta de hacer las traducciones al español una realidad. Estamos muy felices de que muchas más voluntarias y voluntarios se nos han unido en este esfuerzo y hoy podemos dar a conocer el fruto de estos meses de trabajo a toda la comunidad. ¡Lo logramos!

My favorite tool for data analysis is R.

I have used it for a few years now, I feel at ease when I need to work with tabular data. Using R makes my work enjoyable. I can clean my data in one place - RStudio - and then work with it creating new graphics. I also enjoy learning new things in R. Its constant development gives you the chance to learn a bit more every day. This is thanks to a huge collaborative community that supports you, with quick answers, with examples, and with new packages.

Invitación a participar

Las Carpentries, el Nodo Nacional de Bioinformática México (NNB), y la Sociedad Iberoamericana de Bioinformática (SoIBio) les invitan a participar en el proyecto Carpentry para América Latina.

Las Carpentries han generado material para enseñar a investigadores y estudiantes, las habilidades computacionales necesarias para realizar su trabajo de manera eficiente. Actualmente, las carpentries cuentan con más de una docena de lecciones creadas con técnicas de pedagogía actual. Estas lecciones se han promovido en talleres en más de 37 países. Carpentry para América Latina tiene la intención de promover este movimiento con la comunidad hispana.

##First Data Carpentry workshop in Darwin Australia##

The COMBINE Data Carpentry R workshop at Charles Darwin University was filled with joy, enthusiastic attendees and extra degrees of warm.

This was a Self-Organised workshop led by COMBINE with help of local organisers mainly from the Menzies School of Health Research. After some emailing back and forth, three months before the workshop, we planned to have an R data carpentry workshop based on the answers of a custom-made survey (prepared by Steven). Then, two COMBINE instructors were called, so Westa and I volunteered for this workshop and started with preps. The workshop was capped for 30 people with a nominal fee to cover for catering ($50 AUD). People were well-disposed and a good sign was that 45 days before the workshop the registration reached its limits. Later on, there were 2 dropouts and we were able to add 2 people from the waiting list.
