Durante 2020 y 2021 enseñamos dos entrenamientos para instructores de Carpentries organizados por MetaDocencia. Estos workshops tuvieron una serie de características particulares:

Completamente en español: tanto trainers como participantes fueron personas de Latinoamérica, hablantes nativos de español.
En linea.
En cuatro encuentros de medio día a lo largo de dos semanas.
Se organizó un quinto encuentro opcional para completar los tres pasos del checkout.

Los dos primeros puntos hicieron el entrenamiento mucho más accesible a personas hispanohablantes y de la región que querían formarse para poder enseñar mejor. Que el workshop sea en español derriba una de las barreras de acceso más importantes a los materiales y prácticas que promueve The Carpentries. Que el workshop sea on-line permite que más personas participen desde sus lugares, sin tener que viajar. Las dos ediciones de los cursos juntaron personas de Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, México y Uruguay. Esto también contribuye a la formación de una comunidad regional porque facilita comenzar a conocernos y compartir las experiencias específicas de nuestra región.

Teaching to teach between communities in Spanish

During 2020 and 2021 we taught two trainings for Carpentries instructors organized by MetaDocencia. These workshops had a number of particular characteristics:

Completely in Spanish: both trainers and participants were people native Spanish-speakers from Latin America.
Online.
In four half-day meetings over two weeks.
An optional fifth meeting was organized to complete the three steps of the checkout.

The first two items made the training much more accessible to Spanish speakers and people from the region who wanted to be trained to be able to teach better. The fact that the workshop is in Spanish breaks down one of the most important access barriers to the materials and practices promoted by The Carpentries. The fact that the workshop is online allows more people to participate from their locations, without having to travel. The two editions of the courses brought together people from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Uruguay. This also contributes to enriching the regional community because it makes it easier to get to know each other and share the specific experiences of our region.

Entre septiembre de 2017 y mayo de 2018 desarrollamos una iniciativa impulsada por la comunidad para traducir las lecciones de Software Carpentry al español. Su resultado fue la producción de tres lecciones de alta calidad, que pueden utilizarse para enseñar un taller de Software Carpentry consistente de La Terminal de Unix, Control de Versiones con Git, y R para Análisis Científicos Reproducibles.

El siguiente paso lógico para potenciar la cartera de lecciones en español de The Carpentries era traducir una lección de Data Carpentry basada en Python. En noviembre de 2018 iniciamos y completamos un esfuerzo comunitario para crear Análisis y visualización de datos usando Python.

CarpentryCon Experienced by Latin American Attendees

Inspired by the “CarpentryCon Experienced by the African Carpentry Task Force” blog post, we decided to copycat our friends from the other side of the Atlantic and share our experience.

CarpentryCon was on my plans to attend since last year. Yes, I was super eager to meet the online community in person. Interacting with people online and then to see familiar faces and add a hug to each of the greetings was very gratifying. I’ve been working with the Carpentry community for three years and a bit more, and since last year, having many online meetings, multiple email and issue threads. All of you were part of my days, also I’ve missed not seeing some of you. For me, it was a sharing kind of event, people are so passionate and interested in taking this forwards so it was always very nice to hear the stories behind what has been achieved. It also gladly surprised me to have heard so many “thank you” phrases flowing one way or the other. Thanks for every person who made the event possible and looking forward to keep on the train of the communities. A personal highlight, when I presented the work of The Carpentries in Latin America in a short talk, I felt the need to continue with this, because many people will benefit of this amazing community.
