Some of our community members may have heard us mention our fiscal sponsor, Community Initiatives, at one time or another in the last year, but many have not. This is a testament to the amazing job that Community Initiatives (CI) does supporting pretty much everything that we do in ways that are pretty much always unseen. We would like to shine a spotlight on CI and express our sincere and inspired gratitude for their support this year.

Gratitude to Member Organisations and Champions

The Carpentries Membership program will be going into its sixth year in 2020. Member Organisations were some of the earliest supporters of Software and Data Carpentry (though the nomenclature has evolved) and continue to be an invaluable source of support and inspiration within The Carpentries’ Community.

Since 2015, the number of organisations that have rallied around The Carpentries’ mission and vision to support our global community and build their own local communities through Membership has increased every year. In 2015 there were less than five Member Organisations, and this year our website lists over 90 from around the world. At each of these organisations are one or more Champions, Carpentries community members who advocate locally for the use of Carpentries resources and pedagogy and for the support of the global Carpentries community, as well as a host of others who organise workshops, navigate the tangle of paperwork, approve funds, and build community. To all of you, we literally cannot say thank you enough.

Extending Gratitude to CarpentryCon 2020's Task Force

The Carpentries’ CarpentryCon Task Force exists to organise and deliver the next CarpentryCon - a remarkable global assemblage of Carpentries members and friends. The Task Force started working together on January 22, 2019 and has not looked back! Our major planning milestones have answered these questions; the what, when and where? We are focusing on Growing inclusive, computational communities and leaders, between 29th June and 1st July 2020, at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, United States. But beyond this answer, in the planning process, we ended with two top venues, leading to the inception of the annual CarpentryCon cycle from bi-annual, and a planned venue for CarpentryCon 2021 to be a pass-on baton to the next Task Force. Next year’s CarpentryCon has achieved a lot in the planning this year led by Christina and Ouso.

Member Survey Results and the next Member Organisation Council Meetings

The Member Organisation Council Meetings held June 2019 were full of great conversation, questions and tips related to building local community around computational training using The Carpentries Membership. 34 representatives from 29 different Member Organisations worldwide joined four calls across three days and times to discuss all things Carpentries. We discussed the best format for regular instructor meetups, identifying local instructors, connecting to geographically local communities, the optimal number of instructors to meet training demand, and roles beyond that of instructor that facilitate workshop organisation, just to mention a few. Announcing Elizabeth as New Director of Membership

Once, at a cousin’s birthday party, I was excited to announce to my family that I wanted to become a spy when I grew up. Now, I am excited to announce my new role as Director of Membership with The Carpentries. At first glance, the path between the two seems unclear, but I am excited to bring to this new role the experiences and perspectives I gained along the way.

Join us in celebrating the release of The Carpentries’ first official annual report! This report provides a quick overview of our activities for the past year and a look into the coming year. It also serves to communicate the mission, achievements, and fiscal health of The Carpentries to potential members and funding organizations.

Because this report is primarily intended for people and organisations encountering The Carpentries for the first time, it highlights the history of The Carpentries and the values of our community. We believe that this report will also be of interest to our current community members. It provides an quick, graphical, and (we hope!) fun overview of the past action-packed year, along with a statement of progress toward our mission, and a snapshot of our finances over the past year. Introducing Elizabeth Williams and Karen Word

At our recent in-person staff meeting in Davis, California, we introduced three new members to the team, SherAaron Hurt, Elizabeth Williams and Karen Word. All will be working with the Carpentries part-time.

Elizabeth has joined Software and Data Carpentry in a part time role as Business Administrator to assist with onboarding and supporting Member organizations and general business and financial operations.
