HPC Carpentry Approved as The Carpentries' Fourth Lesson Program

On 5 February 2026, our Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve the adoption of HPC Carpentry as the fourth official lesson program of The Carpentries, alongside the Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry, and Software Carpentry lesson programs. In this post, our Director of Curriculum and members of the HPC Carpentry Steering Committee reflect on an exciting moment and explore what is involved in operationalising a new lesson program.

Calling for new Lesson Program Governors

The Lesson Program Governance Committees (LPGCs) of Library Carpentry and Software Carpentry are looking for new members. This is an exciting time for both projects as they consider expanding their range of workshops. Joining the community governance body is a great way to guide the development and support the progress of a lesson program.

What is a Lesson Program Governor?

LPGCs oversee the strategy of the lesson program, advocate for the project in their networks, and act as a point of contact for the project e.g., liaising with the Board of Directors, the Core Team, and the wider community. HPC Carpentry Enters Lesson Program Incubation

We are thrilled to announce that HPC Carpentry has entered Lesson Program Incubation. This is another big step towards the project joining Data Carpentry, Library Carpentry and Software Carpentry as our The Carpentries Lesson Program.

Toby Hodges, The Carpentries Director of Curriculum, said:

I am delighted to see HPC Carpentry move a big step closer to joining The Carpentries. I attended my first HPC Carpentry workshop in Dublin in 2018 – the day before the first ever CarpentryCon! – and have been enthusiastically following them ever since. I know from previous roles how challenging it can be for researchers to get to grips with high-performance computing environments, and the positive impact good-quality training in these skills can have on the scale and reproducibility of their work. So I find the prospect of adding HPC Carpentry workshops to the list of training offered by The Carpentries really exciting. The project is also supported by an inspiring community that shares the values of our own: adopting the project as an official Lesson Program and merging our two communities will strengthen both groups.

Introducing the new Instructor Trainers Leadership Committee for 2024

In February, the Instructor Trainer community held its fourth annual election for the Instructor Trainers Leadership Committee, a Committee that provides governance and development support to our growing subcommunity of Instructor Trainers, and makes decisions on behalf of that community that affect our Instructor Training program and related policies. Previously called the Trainers Leadership Committee during its first 3 years of existence (2021, 2022, and 2023) this Committee will now be referred to as the Instructor Trainers Leadership Committee to emphasise its service specifically to the Instructor Trainer community. In their third year as an elected body, the Instructor Trainers Leadership Committee oversaw two important changes:

The Carpentries Community Facilitators Program: 6-months in

In September 2020, The Carpentries introduced the Community Facilitators Program. This new initiative sought to create new pathways for active involvement in everyday community activities by more community members. This program was developed to sustain the growing Carpentries community and support other core programs that contribute to the advancement of our mission. In November 2020, we met The Carpentries Feedback Facilitators, who were onboarded as our first cohort of Community Facilitators, focussing on feedback facilitation.
