One of the benefits of being a member organisation with The Carpentries is that you hold a seat on The Carpentries Member Council. This is where member organisations and The Carpentries leadership can discuss what is working and what needs revamping or tweaking. At our last council meeting, recruiting helpers and adjusting to teaching online came up as challenges. Since then, we have begun to provide our Instructors additional training in online teaching and host organisations received templates to support with helper recruitment, enabling our community to teach over 588 workshops online since March 2020.

100 Members Strong, A Community Accomplishment

It is hard to believe that from a vision of wanting to teach members of the community the foundations of computational and data science skills, we have grown to an organisation with 100 active memberships. This milestone reminds us that there is a community behind each membership that is receiving access to training and workshops, of which to date, 3,100 have been delivered to roughly 80,000 learners from all over the world!

Library Carpentry’s Journey: Seeding the Future

Since 2018, Library Carpentry has been on a fruitful trajectory of growth and expansion. Fueled by a generous Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant awarded to the California Digital library, we have advanced the scope, adoption, and impact of Library Carpentry across the nation. Community partnerships have formed with libraries at academic institutions both in the US and around the globe, creating a rich and collaborative Library Carpentry community and making computational skills training widely available to librarians and researchers across disciplines. Supplemental funding by the IMLS has supported a growing number of Carpentries workshops and instructor training opportunities as well as a membership scholarship program to reach new and diverse library communities and consortia.

Introducing our new Director of Partnerships

We are delighted to welcome Al Obayuwana to The Carpentries team as our new Director of Partnerships. In this role, Al will focus on further developing our Membership program, supporting current Members, and expanding our membership base across a diverse range of institutions. Al comes to us with extensive experience working with community-based non-profits. In his most recent position as Vice President of Youth and Community Development for the YMCA, he successfully established new programming and greatly expanded fundraising revenue for the organisation. We are excited to add Al’s skills in relationship-building, program development, and fundraising to the team.
